Sinai Silence
by Rabbi David Ebner
Melachim 1: Chs. 18, 19
They shout:
the Lord -
He is God,
but pray only to Baal.
They deliver
his prophets to You,
and lust only for
murder.
In desert winds
I hear truth;
in wilderness silence
I see justice;
in mountain caves
I find myself.
The whirlwind thunders
Your testimony;
earth-roar
Your word;
fire-rage
Your passion.
I would be alone.
Your praise echoes
in wilderness quiet,
in jackal keen,
in desert silence,
in raven crow.
I would be alone.
No more,
the angry face
of weak willed kings.
No more,
the frenzied dance
of bloodied prophets.
Only silence
echoes My voice;
only stillness
whispers My word.
Take Sinai silence.
Fold it in your mantle,
cast it on a plowman,
envelop him in love.
Alone together,
speak poems of silence.
Alone together,
sing songs of truth.
