Profile:   Max Davis

Max Davis hails from Brookline, Massachusetts, and is to attend Harvard University next year. The following are some of his impressions as an overseas student at Yeshivat Hamivtar Orot Lev.

I sit next to "Tex" in the Beit Midrash. On his giant fingers, he can count the number of Jews who attended his 3000 student Texas public high school. He has had little experience with Hebrew, much less Aramaic and Talmud. Yet he has come to Yeshivat Hamivtar Orot Lev and devours whatever he is taught. Yeshiva University is at the forefront of his future plans.

One day during lunch, Jeremy explained to me the physics of the sonic booms we regularly hear. His hobbies include cosmology and writing for Physics of Plasma Journal. He also writes excellent divrei Torah.

Josh can dismantle and reassemble a Harley in the bitter cold of the Yukon.

Matt has been known to relieve stress by playing guitar in Jerusalem clubs.

Nevo never misses a three-pointer, and Isaac speaks Swedish, English, Polish, Russian, Hebrew, French, and German in a pinch.

With their diverse backgrounds and talents, these students have come to study at Hamivtar Orot Lev. I have seen them learning late into the night in the Beit Midrash and have been inspired by their zeal. Yet they retain their individuality, and it is apparent in the ways they meticulously learn and dismantle texts.

My own background pales in comparison to theirs - born on the east coast of America, I attended Maimonides high school and am interested in urban studies - but I have come to Hamivtar Orot Lev because I too want to learn. I never had a particular love of studying, never believed yeshiva life could be enjoyable, was certain that sitting and dissecting a text for an hour was a feat meant for rabbis only. However, my experience here has taught me otherwise. Although my own learning progress has been slow, I have learned what sorts of people can thrive in a yeshiva and they inspire me daily.
