Click here to download file (PDF format) The קונטרס מלאכת אוכל נפש is an article meant to deal with the defining characteristics of those מלאכות permitted by Torah law on Yom Tov, though they are forbidden on שבת. It starts by attempting to understand whether the permissibility of אוכל נפש relates to the particular activity at hand, or to the archetype מלאכה itself. It then deals with the many interpretations of this rule. In the study of תלמוד בבלי מסכת ביצה, these questions are not dealt with explicitly. This has resulted in the Rishonim stating their opinions on the matter in a wide scatter of places, and in various approaches. I tried to organize theses sources and opinions in an orderly fashion, bringing down the major opinion and their minor variations in a way that is progressively understood. Comments are welcome
